Kale - Marrowstem - Brassica oleracea
Biennial, Heirloom Noted in an 1863 book, Field and Garden Vegetables of America, this kale reaches up to 30" tall with an abundance of leaves which can be eaten raw or cooked and are especially tender when young. The stem is edible and tasty.

Planting & Care
Soil and Water: Kale will thrive in any moderately fertile soil with good drainage, organic matter, and a pH range of 5.5-6.5. It needs regular, even watering to avoid bitterness.
Planting and Growing: Start indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost. Move outdoors just before the last frost. Can also direct seed in the fall 3 months before the first frost. Kale is most tender and delicious after a frost. Harvest can continue even after snow. Cover with light row cover as a barrier to cabbage worms.
Harvesting & Storage: Harvest leaves from the bottom up as the plant grows. Flavor improves after light frost exposure.
