(Artemisia annua) Also known as Sweet Annie, this easy-to-grow annual features tall, aromatic plants with fern-like, silvery foliage that emits a sweet fragrance. Grown primarily for its ornamental value, it’s popular in floral arrangements, wreaths, and pressed flower crafts. Its fragrant leaves attract bees, butterflies, and birds, and it performs well in containers. Sweet Annie is also being studied for its potential medicinal properties, including use as an antihelminthic and in treating chloroquine-resistant malaria.

How to Grow:
Self-sowing annual. Germination: 70°F, 7–21 days. Prefers full sun or part shade and well-drained soil. Sow indoors six weeks before the last frost or direct sow in spring after frost, or in fall on bare soil. Space plants to allow 48–72 inch growth. Prune as needed. May self-sow aggressively in some climates but is easy to manage and pleasantly fragrant when weeded. For drying, harvest when flower heads develop and hang upside down in a dark, ventilated area. To save seeds, dry mature flowers and shake into a paper bag. Seed may contain light chaff.
