In the 1843 Shaker seed company at New Lebanon, NY, it was one of the most commonly grown and best-documented varieties in the country.

The 2 x 4 inch deep-red fruits are a striking departure from modern tomatoes, featuring heavy ribbing or lobes and a flattened shape. Revered for its historical significance, the Large Red tomato was a staple in ante-bellum garden recreations and historic farms. Fearing Burr, in his 1865 book, noted that it was almost the only kind cultivated or commonly known during the early introduction of tomatoes in the country.

Beyond its historical allure, the flavor profile is a delight—sweet with a hint of tang and intricate nuances. The vines offer medium foliage cover. Introduced for its historical significance, the Large Red surprised and pleased during 1996 trials, becoming a favorite of a local restaurant’s chef.
