Patterson is a modern hybrid storage champion developed as the superior successor to the beloved Copra onion, bred for unmatched uniformity, larger size, and extreme longevity—making it a go-to for northern growers seeking reliable winter keepers. This long-day variety excels in cool northern climates, producing extra-large, firm yellow bulbs with thick copper-golden skins, moderate pungency, and good sugar content for versatile flavor—perfect for soups, stews, roasting, or fresh slicing. Each bundle contains approximately 75 healthy, premium, non-GMO plants grown with natural and regenerative practices.

Key Details at a Glance

  • Day length: Long-Day (best in zones 3–6)
  • Days to maturity: 104–110 from transplant
  • Mature bulb size: 3–4+ inches, up to 1 lb each
  • Storage life: 8–12 months when cured
  • Bundle size: Approximately 75 bare-root plants

Why Grow Patterson?

  • Ultimate storage onion – Keeps firm and flavorful nearly a full year; outlasts Copra and most varieties.
  • Uniform giants – Consistent globe-to-blocky shape and size for easy harvest, packing, and market sales.
  • Disease resistant – Strong tolerance to Fusarium and pink root; reliable in northern soils.
  • High yields & flavor – Larger than Copra with balanced sweet-pungent taste; great raw or cooked.
  • Commercial-grade – Trusted by pros for its firmness, thin necks, and rot resistance.

Growing Tips Direct-transplant as soon as soil can be worked in early spring (soil ≥40°F). Space 4–6″ apart in rows 12–18″ apart. Provide full sun, consistent moisture (1″ weekly), and sidedress with nitrogen near summer solstice. Mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Harvest when 50–70% of tops yellow and fall over; push over the rest and cure in a dry, airy spot for 2–3 weeks.

Standard Information

  • Plant type: Bulbing onion (Allium cepa)

  • Soil: Well-drained, fertile loam; pH 6.0–7.0

  • Hardiness zones: 3–9 (bulbs form best in long-day regions)
