Growing tips

🌱Direct sow in midsummer (10–12 weeks before first frost) for a fall harvest. Rutabaga thrives in cool weather and needs time to mature before hard freezes — timing your sow date is the most important step.

☀️Plant in full sun with loose, fertile, well-drained soil. Thin to 6–8" apart once seedlings are established — crowded roots stay small. Consistent moisture during root development is key.

❄️Leave roots in the ground through light frosts — cold temperatures convert starches to sugars and significantly improve flavor. Harvest before the ground freezes hard or mulch heavily to extend the season.

🍲Peel, cube, and roast with olive oil and thyme, mash with butter and cream as a potato alternative, or add to winter stews for body and sweetness. Stores well in a cool, humid root cellar for months.
