Texas Super Sweet (1015Y) is Texas's most iconic sweet onion, developed in the 1970s by Texas A&M from Granex types introduced from the Bermuda Islands in 1898—where early breeders like Dr. Henry A. Jones selected for massive size and mild flavor that earned it the nickname "Texas Superstar" in 2021.

This short-day variety dominates southern gardens, producing jumbo, globe-shaped yellow bulbs with off-white, ultra-sweet flesh and minimal pungency—perfect for raw slicing in salads, salsas, grilling, or caramelizing without tears. Each bundle contains approximately 75 healthy, premium, non-GMO plants grown with natural and regenerative practices.

Key Details at a Glance

  • Day length: Short-Day (best in zones 7–10)
  • Days to maturity: 75–110 from transplant
  • Mature bulb size: 4–6+ inches, up to 1 lb each
  • Storage life: 2–3 months when cured (best eaten fresh)
  • Bundle size: Approximately 75 bare-root plants

Why Grow Texas Super Sweet?

  • Ultra-sweet flavor – Low pyruvate means no tears; eat raw like candy or cook for enhanced sugars.
  • Jumbo yields – Softball-sized bulbs with high productivity; one of the largest short-day sweets.
  • Texas heritage – Official state favorite; parent of Vidalia; reliable in southern heat.
  • Beginner-friendly – Disease-resistant, forgiving in clay soils; high success rate for new growers.
  • Market star – Commands premium prices; versatile for fresh sales or home use.

Growing Tips Direct-transplant as soon as soil can be worked in early spring (soil ≥40°F). Space 4–6″ apart in rows 12–18″ apart. Provide full sun, consistent moisture (1″ weekly), and occasional nitrogen boosts. Mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Harvest when 50–70% of tops yellow and fall over; cure in a dry, airy spot for 2–3 weeks.

Standard Information

  • Plant type: Bulbing onion (Allium cepa)
