Red Rock Onion Plants (Short/Intermediate-Day)

Red Rock is a vibrant, high-performance red onion bred for bold color, sweet-spicy flavor, and excellent storage in transition zones. This Short/intermediate-day variety produces medium-large, globe-shaped bulbs with deep crimson skin and striking purple-red rings that hold their hue through cooking—perfect for fresh salads, grilling, pickling, or long-keeping. Each bundle contains approximately 75 healthy, premium, non-GMO plants grown with natural and regenerative practices.

Key Details at a Glance

  • Day length: Intermediate-Day (best in zones 5–9)
  • Days to maturity: 100–110 from transplant
  • Mature bulb size: 3–4 inches
  • Storage life: 5–7 months when cured
  • Bundle size: Approximately 75 bare-root plants

Why Grow Red Rock?

  • Intense red color – Rich, glossy skin and deep rings; stunning raw or cooked.
  • Sweet with a kick – Balanced flavor—milder than storage reds, punchier than sweets.
  • Strong keeper – Outperforms most red onions in storage; lasts into winter.
  • Market standout – Eye-catching at farm stands; high customer appeal.

Growing Tips Direct-transplant as soon as soil can be worked in early spring (soil ≥40°F). Space 4–6″ apart in rows 12–18″ apart. Provide full sun, consistent moisture (1″ weekly), and occasional nitrogen boosts. Mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Harvest when 50–70% of tops yellow and fall over; cure in a dry, airy spot for 2–3 weeks.

Standard Information

  • Plant type: Bulbing onion (Allium cepa)
  • Sun: Full sun (6–8+ hours)
  • Soil: Well-drained, fertile loam; pH 6.0–7.0
  • Water: Consistent, especially during bulb formation
  • Hardiness zones: 3–9 (bulbs form best in intermediate-day regions)
